Such thinking was more comprehensive and fluid than the linear, rational logic of analytical thinking which produced only limited conclusions, viewed in isolation rather than as part of the complex systems surrounding any given issue. It was essential executives understood that another mode of perceiving and processing information existed as a means to navigating complexity.
Let's say an executive had devised a strategic plan, but his attempts to introduce it were subverted by a handful of senior managers whose primary interest was to "protect their patch." Thwarted from within, the executive was frustrated and at a stalemate. Often what he or she was unable to see was that the managers were operating within a system that rewarded them for protecting their patch. In this case, the system actually placed them in opposition to the interests of the organisation as a whole.
Or perhaps a CEO exhorted the value of a culture that innovated and took risks, but was unable to see that the system in which its employees operated in fact did not incentivise risk and innovation.
Systemic thinkers could see such connections to factors outside the immediate operating environment that created complexity. Their thought process was fluid and far-reaching, comprehending that external systems were in constant flux, requiring businesses to achieve the same state of adaptability. Consequently, systemic thinkers could predict outcomes and foresee opportunities others could not – and shift strategies accordingly.
